Morals and Deism
Many Christians like to point out that not having an official dogma nor a book of scriptures; Deists have no code of morals, unlike those members of the only “true religion”. Let’s examine morals closely and see the source of mankind’s morals. Christians and other “reveal” religionists believe that morals come from god. If this were true, then wouldn’t the morals exhorted by the different religions (and in some cases sects of the same religion) be the same worldwide? Others contend that we are “hard-wired” for morals and again I ask, “Should all cultures have the same moral code, if that were true?”
Morals come from society and from nowhere else. Morals are the greases that lubricate the daily interactions of human society, both individual to individual and culture to culture. When these morals differ greatly or are ignored by one culture and not the other, we have occurrences such as what happened post 1492, where the morals dictated by a culture driven by avarice allowed that culture to totally destroy and subsume many societies and peoples much more moral.
Since Deists are members of whichever culture they were born into or reside in, they have the same morals as every other member of that culture. While Christians like to claim that it is their morals that drive America, a quick check will show the American morals differ in several places with Christian morals, especially in keeping the Sabbath and having no other god before him, etc. Is there any questions on Deism, morals and so forth?

great post mako
i've been questioned about my morals on more then one occasion i'm an atheist and i get it all the time....
i remember trying to explain it to people, although no where near as clearly as you have stated it and i always get the same thing if you don't believe in what i do how can you know right or wrong...
some even go so far as to say if i didn't believe in my god i would go crazy and murder people...
i thnk many religious people don't realize where their morals really come from, and when they make the statment that they get their morals from their religion it astounds me...
for the christians that do this in the US i ususally come out say this
"Slavery was not only acceptable 200 years ago, it was considered a good deed by many, and defended using the bible. The bible was also used to justify the Holocaust, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition. This shows that the bible can be used to defend even the most immoral and unethical ideals, and is therefore not an adequate yardstick to measure moral or ethical behavior."
lol then they're usually really mad....
and i ususally try to point out that although we suposedly make up 10% of the population, we make up less then 1% of the population of prison...
anyway i know that i'm not the same as you but i do understand the problem and i hope that someday people will realize the truth about morality and society...
i won't hold my breath thoug.... |

I agree with you on that Mako. Being a Pagan I definitely have a different moral standard than most christians. My Catholic neighbor and I can go round and round about gay marriage, me being for it and her against.
I wonder how much empathy plays apart in the development of morals in culture. Is empathy a learn behavior? I have encountered many people who seem to have no empathy for anything and have no moral holds on inflecting pain on fellow creatures. Then there a people who possess great deal of empathy and seem to have IMO the better moral standard. As I see morals. |

i agree with the fact morals can be created out of the falacys of religion and society to be used to control people like laws. But i beleive humans are capable of divining a certain code of morality that is universal amongst all, like instincts, except our society gets in the way of it and pushes all this bullshit onto. Just becuase religion and the laws that govern us have some fairly bankrupt morality behind them, i couldnt say that morality shouldnt or doesnt exist, as it clearly does.
Btw what sort of pagan are you Darkwind? _________________ No churchman am I for to rail and to write,

I can't really see any universal code of morality. Everything I can think of that we consider as moral, has at sometime in the past, has not been part of the moral code of one culture or another. :orcass: |

"It becomes increasingly clear the Christian Churches have used the message of the man Jesus, and the Christ Jesus, as a means of influence and power. Moreover, they have tied their own hands with paradoxical dogmas and, because of this and the slowness of their systems, are unable to extricate themselves from the prison of their own making."
Ernst Senkowski, 1980
This statement can be applied to any organized religion or any other belief system that uses strict guidelines for personal behavior or morals. Decency is the only rule that has been relayed to us and even then there are no punishments for "breaking" the rules. There is no such thing! Spiritual progression is absolute, you will never go backwards or de-evolve!
With that being said there are those beings that may take it upon themselves to "correct" you if you were to harm innocence. Other concepts that would help your spiritual progression would be to protect the innocent and only help those who request help. In other words, don't stick your nose in someone elses business. There are certain trials that all beings must go through in order to learn the lessons we are to learn while here, which is thought and emotional control. _________________ Frank D. Ratka Jr.

You are correct for these individuals from an aberrant conditioning point of view, up to a certain age, then free choice comes into play.
