Currently, my favorite book is Junky by William S. Burroughs. It is a fictional, autobiographical account of his life as a heroin addict. It is based both in the United States and Mexico, where he fled to escape criminal charges.
This dude is friggin crazy. He killed his wife (for real) by shooting her in the head when they were reinacting William Tell (I believe) and he was trying to shoot an apple off her head while blindfolded.
Some of his writings are reviewed in the scholarly realm.
