I think it's mostly because Earth is big and old. For every culture/belief in the world today, there are countless religions and gods that have passed in and out of conscious thought as civilizations rose and fell. Every single one of them thought they had all the answers, too. And then they died out or got crushed out by the next group of opressors. Whichever came first. heh.
We forget that (trusted) air travel is less than a century old. That Columbus and the Vikings and who all else had hard slogs over the oceans to get anywhere new and unexplored and for a long time most people thought the world was flat anyway and weren't going to go more than a few miles from where they were born in their entire lifetime. There was a lot of room in the world to have a religion all your own back then, with belief systems specialized for where you were living and how you were living and what your personal future probably held. And, you probably were never going to meet anyone who didn't think the way you did.
Now the world feels incredibly small and we're bumping elbows with everyone from everywhere every day and getting bombarded with the idea that hey, these people grew up under a whole different set of rules and laws and beliefs. And then we still ask the question you ask...
