Post subject: Teaching kids about Nature's bounty
|
|
|
My dad taught me to use Nature's bounty as part of a healthy diet.
When I was little, my dad was walk us for miles in the country side, teaching us what we could and couldn't eat.
We used to Pick up dried cow-pats for fuel for the open fires we had. Memories of Picking berries at the end of Summer, nuts at the beginning of Autumn, and dandelions most of the year made interesting wines and salad leaves. Marigolds, and most flowers make good eating. Herbs are great for healing the everyday ills, without resorting to the medicine cabinet. Nettles and fresh seaweed as an accompaniment to Sunday roasts. The list was endless. Since I had my kids, who are now 10 and 12, I have found myself teaching them what my dad taught me. I find my kids more ready and willing to try new foods, and they enjoy going out and 'harvesting' dinner or pudding or both! Something I can recommend to everyone. Not only do you get free grub, but you get quality time with the kids too :O)

wow that sounds like it would have been so fun, personally my family wasn't much of an out doors type especially when it comes to food...
but i do enjoy hiking and it woudl be very interesting to really know what you could find out there to keep your self fed if worse came to worse... lol
it's really cool that you are teaching those things to your kids, and it made me smile thinking about parents involving their children with those things |

Manapa, here's a website regarding edible plants etc.
http://www.wilderness-survival.net/Appb.php
Both my kids take after their dad for eating - very fussy eaters. The most I've been able to do is persuade my son to try a few fresh chives only because he grew them himself. Anything not from a supermarket they view as immediately suspicious. I've tried to change their minds by taking them for walks and picking things like blackberries/strawberries (familiar things), but they won't have it - yet their neighbour keeps a couple of pet chickens and they still eat chicken... They do however enjoy learning about nature & growing things etc, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed they'll get more adventurous as they get older and give them every opportunity to have the option of trying new things. _________________

oh i'm sure they will come around eventually, ust present it in a positive light and make it seem really cool, like they can tell their friends if they were cought out in the wild they could survive by eating things such as ""
but i've been a fussy eater all of my life too, and i've jsut recently come around and it took me 24 years lol just stay paitent |

Sheri check out the website hun http://www.wilderness-survival.net/Appb.php there are survival techniques listed. You could study and try some out in your own backyard to gain confidence and see if it suits you The site is based on an army survival guide so you'll have to skim over some of the combat stuff... Unless you want to learn that too of course LOL _________________

Ray Mears! LOL I had to search the UKTVHistory site to find it. The programme is called Bushcraft.

Ray Mears: Who are you?
Ray Mears grew up on the North Downs where he took great interest in the forest, tracking foxes and learning about the flora and fauna from an early age. After hitting the library to read up on every survival technique known to man, Mears started practising these ancient skills and travelled the world with them. Travel enabled him to experience hunting and tracking as well as learning the traditions associated with the skills. Ray has always had a huge respect for indigenous people and culture. And I bet you didn’t know he is also an expert in botanical science and a professional photographer!

| As a child we would go wild blueberry picking, i know how to fish (or at least i used to) pretty well.....but here where I live now the idea of taking my son out to do the same thing isn't going to happen, this time of year it's not safe because of the snakes and in the summer it's honestly to hot to do it and in the fall you can't unless you want to get shot with all the hunters here.....and to be honest being in the woods for me is somewhat theraputic but for my spoiled child the idea is somewhat terrorfying...... |

there is no reason to fear snakes lol hunters on the other hand....
lol i grew up in georgia where it was pretty swampy, you have to learn to respect nature and understand where not to step or poke your nose and you'll be fine lol
i was taught to fish and pick berries too mostly by my mother though, i never did like to eat fish lol yuck....
i do love the woods though there is no place i like more for peace of mind |

| snakes are a huge issue here at this time of year we have water moccasins and copperheads that are breading and it is dangerous to be in any grass that you can't see.....that's not to mention the black widow spiders and brown recluse that we have a lot of....as for hunters they are also huge the dogs etc.....it's not the wisest thing here |
