Post subject: Bottled Water v. Tap Water
|
|
|
Recently saw a piece on this on TV and the findings were quite non-surprising. Before I go into what I saw and what I think about the facts as presented, I'd rather see and read some discussion.

it really just depends. tap water is usually alright. bottled water tastes rather funky sometimes. too bad there isn't just pure water... without the minerals and crap. those minerals make it taste strange.
honestly, i like the water from most school water fountains.
can't STAND sulfur water, though... like at the beach.... man, that stuff makes me want to puke. _________________ "The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible" -Oscar Wilde

I don't actually like the taste of tap water, I only use it for boiling. I tend to use tap for the kettle and percolator and bottled for drinking and adding to squash. Also the thought of what might be in the pipes makes me shudder (always wanted to use that smiley!) after seeing black matter in a glass of tap water; I checked the taps and they were clean... ugh
I do know that certain chemicals are added to tapwater "for the benefit of the consumer", although off the top of my head I couldn't list all of them nor the amounts. Chlorine, I think is one, Fluoride another.
Edit: Here are some links which may be of interest, UK water only I'm afraid.

In this country the most common method of disinfection is the use of chlorine (occasionally you may notice a slight smell of chlorine in your tap water). It is a method that has been used extensively for over 70 years. The disinfecting process is essential to eliminate any bacteria in the water. Water companies have to ensure that enough chlorine remains in the water after it leaves the treatment works to help keep the water safe on its journey to the tap.
Other disinfectants include ozone and ultra violet light, but these do not remain in the water during distribution, so in both cases a small amount of chlorine is added before water goes into distribution.

What effects do fluoride and chloride in the water have?
In some areas, fluoride is added to the water supply. This has been shown to prevent tooth decay. To have this protective effect, the fluoride level in the water should be 1mg per litre. Higher levels may cause ‘mottling’ in children’s teeth. Chlorine is added to the water supply to make sure that it is free of bacteria. There is no evidence that the amount of fluoride or chlorine in water has any influence on the incidence of coronary heart disease.

| Bebi you can request a water content report from your water provider i do it all the time as with you i do not use the tap other than to shower and boil...Sad days when humans have managed to pollute the water source..the only good water left is on the brazilaian rain forests yet the meat industry has forced them by cutting back there funding and those religous do righters to go in a get rid of the indigeonos peoples that are trying to preserve what is left of our rain forests.... |

i agree andy nothing wrong with that....
but to be serious I only use tap water to bath, or cook and even then it's usually filtered....
If I have to drink water (which is rare) i'll get something bottled, but even that has to be a certain brand etc.... |

We have a spring-fed well, so it's tap water for me. Unless I'm at work, where the water tastes like dirt, then it's bottled. But, my favorite water (and I know this is really, really effed up) is water from the garden hose. Everytime I'm out watering the gardens, I HAVE to take a drink from the hose. I need some serious |

actually, water from the garden hose is the exact same kind that comes from your sink... so essentially, if you drink your tapwater, drinking from the garden hose won't hurt ya at all. _________________ "The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible" -Oscar Wilde

I'm sure there are things inside the water hose that I don't really wanna think about. But, maybe it's helped me build up my immune system. Then again, it could be why I'm nuts! Too much garden hose water. |
