Post subject: Tattoos - aftercare
A lot of people use Vaseline as a tattoo aftercare. Don't! Vaseline will make the tattoo blister and scab and you'll lose some of the colour. It's a misconception that scabbing is good for a tattoo. I was advised to use either Pile Cream or KY Jelly for my second tattoo - I was too embarrassed to buy the pile cream so I got some KY... LOL Seriously though the KY keeps the tattoo moist and I had NO scabbing whatsoever. Within a week my tattoo was completely healed. My husband used the same for his tattoo with the same results.
Quick rundown on tattoo care.
Before having a tattoo done make sure you eat well. Some people can faint during the process.
Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol thins the blood slightly and can cause complications.
Keep the tattoo covered for 24 hours to prevent infection. A good tattoo parlour will provide a dressing for this purpose.
Use KY Jelly or Pile Cream twice daily, preferably after a shower/bath so it locks the moisture in.
Bathe the tattoo in clean water (boiled and cooled if you prefer) Soap can irritate it.
If scabs form don't pick them off - as the tattoo bleeds the colour bleeds out.
Any other questions I'll try my best to answer _________________

Hi hunny! Hate to be a pain & disagree with you on this one but here we do things a little differently, (maybe the air's different here lol) Anyway, I've always done the following:
Take dressing off after 1-2 hours, shallow wounds need air to breath & aid healing.
I was always told NOT to use pile cream etc, it wasn't designed for tattoos! lol Here we have a cream called "Tattoo Goo" I HIGHLY recommend this, I even use it on my legs during the summer it's SOOOOO good! lol
& obviously I totally agree with you on the not picking your scabs (besides that's just gross!)
I've been told different things about savlon, but I've found that the spray/wash thing is good for mine, but I don't over do it.
Personally, I think it's more down to the type of skin you have, mine'll take anything you throw at it! lol But the tattooist should give aftercare advice anyhow.
Sorry to contradict hun but thought it best to have both types of advice just in case x x _________________

No problems hun, thanks for the updates This is what forums are for - to get everyone's experiences together so we can better help people.
I should have explained the first post better regarding time etc, I meant 24 hours as a maximum - obviously if you're going to be doing something that could get the tat infected then keep it covered. If you're just pottering round the house etc then it's not important lol. Once it's started to heal then infection gets less likely. Treat it like you would any minor wound and you won't go far wrong.
Another thing I forgot - plan ahead. It's best not to wear clothes that rub against the tat for a couple of days, just for the reasons that (a) it will irritate and (b) it's likely to accidentally knock any scabs off. _________________
