Post subject: But, it is for your own good.....
Coming from the UM topic on abortion in the Spirituality VS Skepticism thread.........
Sorry if this is in not the apropriate spot, but I wanted to share my views, and get yours.
Where is the line drawn between inflicting YOUR personal and moral liabilities on others "for their own good"?
Speaking as a male, I will never be directly faced with the choice of whether or not to carry a child to term. Where then, do I get the right to decide whether or not ANY woman get the chance to make such a decision?
By what right does any one or group get to impose their morals on others?
By dictating what a person can do with their own body in one instance, opens the door for interference in other personal choices, in my opinion. By claiming 'moral superiority', and limiting others actions, we open the door to other totalitarian decrees.
If one were to criminalize abortions, would that then require that any woman who aborted spontaneously be subjected to a criminal investigation? "Gee Mrs Brown was pregnant, and then aborted. Maybe she took something........."
By pushing for the criminalization of medical abortions, I feel that those people are saying that they have a better understanding of how one should run one's own life, than the owner of that life.
Up until the last 2 or 3 months, and fetus cannot survive outside the mothers body without drastic medical intervention. To claim that such an organism deserves the
full benefits of being 'human' is disturbing.
And why then, if anti-abortionists are so set against abortions, why are the majority of them also dead set against contraceptives as well? By that logic, male masturbation should be classed as a form of infanticide, no? And shame on the woman that would allow a single menstrual cycle to pass without getting knocked up! The woman has just 'killed' a potential human...... _________________ Masks reveal what they conceal. Indeed, a person does not hide behind a mask so much as struggle beneath the weight of it.

When you think about it the subject of abortion in general is a touchy subject....I don't believe that anyone has the right to decide to take a human life...but ......some circumstances lead me to believe that a woman has the choice...Now don't get me wrong..."I'm Pro- Choice"...I believe that it is ultimately the womans choice whether she wants to carry a child full term..As in the case of "Rape"...I totally agree with an abortion..but ....With all the rules...regulations...etc,....They are making the subject of "Abortion" A 3 ring circus when we are talkin about human life...So for me...I'm Pro-choice...but to go out ...be irresponsible time and time again..knowing that you can just go get an abortion without any consequences...Nope...I don't think it should be aloud...and sadly enough ...a lot of teenage girls are doing just that...I believe in the philosophy..."you play, you pay"....so I'm kind of torn on the whole subject of abortion... _________________ Never fear the dead, fear the living, they are more dangerous...."Trust Me"

This is something I've always been in two minds about. On the one hand in certain situations termination is acceptable (rape was mentioned earlier) but on the other just how do you decide in which circumstances to terminate? Ok, there are cases such as severe disability where a lot of people agree that it's justifiable, but I'm not so sure. There was a storyline recently on Eastenders where Honey gave birth to a downs syndrome baby and was told after the birth that if she'd had the tests she could have terminated the pregnancy - I personally know people who suffer this disability and they lead perfectly happy lives. A lot of people are offered this option and take it simply because they feel they won't be able to cope with a disabled child. In this day and age there are many families who would definitely consider adopting a disabled child. I know for a fact that if either of my children was diagnosed as disabled before birth I wouldn't even have thought about it - I would still love them just as much as I do now. I do however agree that abortion as a contraceptive method is just wrong.

That made me chuckle, it reminded me of a conversation I had with my husband one day regarding cannibalism heh
(apologies if this rambles, it's 3:30am and I can't sleep lol)
