Woman dies after son calls 911; dispatchers think it's a prank
(Update: Detroit, April 7, 2006, 12:24 p.m.) An investigation is underway in Detroit after a six-year-old boy called 911 to get help for his mom, and the operator acted as if it were a joke.
Detroit NBC Affiliate WDIV reports that six-year-old Robert Turner called 911 on February 20. He thought his mother, 46-year-old Sherrill Turner, had passed out. She was later found dead.
911 tapes detail the call, where the boy tells a female operator that his mom had passed out. The operator demands to speak to an adult before sending police.
The boy eventually hung up and called back a short time later. This time, the same operator warns the boy that he could get in trouble for making a prank call to 911. The boy said police didn't arrive until three hours later and found his mother dead.
The boy is living with family members, who are now pursuing a lawsuit.
Officials said the 911 operator will be disciplined, but because of her years of service she will not be fired.
Police continue to investigate.

This is in my area and it's a damn shame that dispatchers aren't better trained to know the difference between a prank and the real deal. This happened here a couple of years ago too when a woman was shot in the head by her boyfriend and she was dying and the dispatcher didn't take her seriously she had to call back and she was told the same thing by another dispatcher. The woman had to call her son in another state and get him to call the nearest precinct to get help. Now she's in a wheelchair and paralyzed. _________________ Motivate Your Mind |

I once called the local police to tell them of some destruction on a local landmark in a cemetery. It's an old Motte & Bailey castle, all that's left is a mound of earth in the corner of the cemetery. Someone had dug what looked like a shallow grave on top of it and there were many dead animals around. The police told me that graves were usual in a cemetery and that they wouldn't attend. Wtf?? LOL I told them clearly that it was dug on top of a 20ft ancient monument and they couldn't care less...
Not kind of the same seriousness, but it just goes to show that the police are lacking in a lot of areas...
Oh and there was the time when I was about 14 and gave the police the registration number of a car they were looking for (A woman had been dragged into the car and later released) they didn't even write it down - just said "ok" and turned to the next person in line... :wallbash:
I'm sure the police are more interested in finable (is that right spelling?) offenses... _________________

I agree...If they would spend more time owning up to their motto...the world would be a safer place...."To protect and serve" obviously doesn't come to their minds..
I had to call the police for a man who had been stalking me...poisoned my dog...and later attacked me...Nobody,,,and I mean nobody would do anything until I was attacked...and then they let him get away...later after I made numerous calls "cuz well he kept coming back"...they finally caught him in my front yard after he had come through another womans window and attacked her I wasn't home at the time.....hmmmm...yeah they protect and serve..I don't have much faith in the police..but....you have a drink of alcohol or go a teensy bit above the speedlimit they're all over you....El Bandito
