It has to be done - a thread about that phenomenon known as "text speak" (amongst other names)
Personally I find it ignorant and shows a lack of basic education. I know that some can actually write correctly but use this text speak to fit in with the crowd. I find this worse than the people who honestly can't write as there's no need for it. It's fine on a mobile or when you have limited character space but in situations such as a forum, personal message or even a chat room it's just sheer laziness. In a chat room situation the odd abbreviation is obviously accepted; such as u (you) and cos (because) etc, but some people take this to extremes.

Isn't that also known as "rat speak"? Where people shorten words like u would 2 save sp33ch!?
If so, then I agree. It isn't cool. Rather it reads more like the poster is a poster child for parents against illiteracy campaigns! |

Shortening a few words in a chat room or on a text doesn't bother me too much because of the space/speed constraints. What does get my goat is people who think they're shortening words when they have the same amount of letters LOL I always always make a comment about it if I'm in chat, and normally the rest of the room are right behind me hehe _________________

If you're not going to enforce the MLA Standard English rules and regs, what's the difference? Isn't all about content? If you can understand what is written, then why allow the writer's "creativity" bother you?
The adage that "you can tell a lot about a person by the way they write" has become archaic and absurd to a certain degree. |

ugh, i definitely can't stand it. the ones that particularly irritate me are the ones that simply misspell words to make it look "cooler". actually, in general, it all just annoys me. occasionally i'll say "gonna", but that's the only thing i ever really shorten.
thankfully, i believe that most of us here are too intelligent for such... insults to the english language.
