I was unsure whether to put this in this section or the pregnancy section. After a bit of thought I decided that I'd leave the pregnancy section to factual based threads and place this here instead.

There's a thread on UM regarding the body affecting objects such as wristwatches and household appliances. An interesting subject came up - whether pregnancy made this phenomenon worse and why.

Original post, starting at the relevent page:
http://www.unexplained-mysteries....dex.php?showtopic=65603&st=15

To make this easy I'll quote my posts.
Quote:

I just had a thought. My experiences regarding electrical appliances and static electricity became worse when I was pregnant with my firstborn. At this time I also had to stop wearing silver as it would tarnish on contact with my skin. I still can't wear silver now, just gold. If I wear a silver ring or a necklace any longer than a couple of hours my skin goes black as well as the jewellery, and if I wear silver earrings my piercings get infected and weep (in fact anything that isn't gold has this effect on my earpiercings).

Another woman said she had the same experience regarding static electricity and it continued until her baby was around 6 months old. Another poster (M) suggested that male electrical levels are stable and womens fluctuate because of pregnancy.

M has an interesting theory that to be honest I've not thought of. Hormone activity is at a peak for both sexes during puberty and has been given as one of the explanations for poltergeist activity - it's not such a leap of the imagination to suggest hormones have a hand in this phenomena...

I don't find it a sexist remark to say that female hormones fluctuate more than male hormones, it's like saying pregnancy is sexist For a healthy ovulating woman the hormone fluctuation will obviously be more apparant than for a male of the same age simply because of the fact that the body in a sense is "getting ready" for pregnancy every time an egg is released.

Any males out there who experience electrical problems who have hormonal problems?

Another poster said this: Interesting, Bebi. I kill watches (currently own a Skagen watch that I'm terrified to wear with any reliability because I really like it), magnetic strips on credit cards, have the odd knack of always being the one to turn on a light and make the bulb go "pop", and routinely zap people.
I also have those sensitive ears. I can't wear any earring that isn't pure gold longer than a day or two or else I will have tarnish on my skin and infected earring holes. I've always been that way. I thought that I would eventually grow out of the sensitivities but...heck no, lol.

And the original poster also admitted to sensitive ears.

*scratches head in confusion* Is this a science class? Cause, if it is, I'm in the wrong room. Bebi, a man's electrical level is alway's stable, even during puberty. It never changes. It stays the same, all the way through a man's life until death, cause, a dead body can't produce electricity.
-end-quote-

Apologies, I'm not a scientist. I was merely hypothesising as to a reason why electrical levels could be elevated in pregnant women (ie hormones). I never said men's electrical levels were affected during puberty, I said that their hormones were elevated (which is biological fact) and I wondered whether this could have an effect.

To re-cap: M has an interesting theory that to be honest I've not thought of. Hormone activity is at a peak for both sexes during puberty and has been given as one of the explanations for poltergeist activity - it's not such a leap of the imagination to suggest hormones have a hand in this phenomena...

What links can you provide to back-up the statement regarding male electrical energy levels? I'd be fascinated to read any research regarding this subject you can provide

Unfortunately M can't provide links, does anyone here have any links for this? I'll be searching out my own and posting the relevent ones here but it may take some time.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this?

So far in the UM thread we have:

At least four people with static electricity problems
Two women whose electrical levels seem to increase during pregnancy
Three people who suffer above normal static electricity problems and also have sensitivities to metals other than gold

I'll eventually try and edit in a Poll to this thread once I've worked out the questions and how to do it Smilie_PDT
