It all depends on where you live and what the weather is like as to what plants you can use, but do a bit of research and find plants that won't grow massive (they normally have an estimated height/width on the lable). Another idea is plants that grow tall and not outwards; there are ornamental flowering cherry trees which do this.

Edit: Garden bonsai! http://www.cdr3.com/catalog/ca00010.htm

Prunus ‘Amanogawa’, bears clusters of semi-double, fragrant, shell pink flowers 1 and ˝ inches across in mid-spring. ‘‘Amanogawa’ is also an interesting tree in fall, when it carries red, yellow and green leaves at the same time. It’s also different from the other cherries on this list because it has a columnar form, growing to 25 feet tall with a spread of only 12 feet.

The soil is the main ingredient for a healthy garden. You will need to have good/clean top soil to which you add some kind of compost or manure. You should never use manure from any animal that consumes meat. cow and horse manure are the best. No, you can't dispose of your dog logs in your garden, sorry. Watering is also important. I use the drip method because it waters from underneath and doesn't cause as many disease and mildue problems. Try to water in the morning but if you must water later in the day try not to get water on the leaves in the heat of the day or if it's later try not to soak or drench your soil because the night time hours are when most of the mildue and mold occur. Also, if it's been raining a few days in one week you may not want to water as much. Only water if necessary.
Weeding is the most hated job but one of the most necessary. Your plants need room to grow and also the weeds rob the nutrients from the plants.
Use a good hoe and it will make the job a whole lot easier.
When growing tomatoes keep an eye out for signs of the dreaded horn worm. They are a green worm that can grow to an enormous size depending on how long you let them feast. The signs are, munched on leaves or piles of worm poop. Look around you'll probably find one close by. Remove and dispose of them, preferably with gloves on.
