Post subject: Biblical Battles, Fact or Fiction?

The other night Dan and I were watching the History Channel about battles and wars of the bible. He says that they must be true and that it is part of recorded history. I said that the only place it's recorded is in the bible and he disagrees. Who's right?
I know that you guys are much more knowlegable when it comes to this topic.

I think some of the battles that are in the Bible might be based on events that happened but they are not entirely fact.

Hmmm, did the battle recorded in the bible actually happen? Well, a lot of it depends on which battles you are referring to. Anything prior to the Assyrians taking the “10 lost tribes” into captivity can not be considered as factual. Especially the so-called “Conquest”. Contrary to what the “biblicist” state, Jericho and the others were in ruins at the time of the supposed Conquest and there is no mention of David or Solomon anywhere except in the Bible so any battles they supposedly fought are questionable.  |

Thanx pal, I knew I could count on you for a straight answer. Although it makes perfect sense to me he isn't going to be so easy to convince. The show compared many battles around the world throughout history relating to tactics used in the bible.

| Just point out to him that the scribes that wrote the bible in the 6th century BCE (yep, it ain’t as old as the Xians like to put on) would have some small knowledge of military tactics and history, so the similarity of what they wrote and real battles would probably only be because they got their information by reading about real battles. |

History written after the fact (in this case battles) can be very factual.

The book "101 Myths of the Bible" by Gary Greenburg is a good place to start. It briefly discusses elements from the Bible that are either amalgams of earlier stories, or outright fabrications.

If the Bible didn't say all the stuff about God that it says, many of you would probably consider the historical part fact, but I guess there's no way to know that now is there.

No not really...archaeological evidence curtails the history of the Jewish people by several centuries. As near as can be ascertained, the Hebrew people came into being in the hill country of Palestine. they and their culture are Canaanite and their first nation came into being in the 9th century BCE...there was no Slavery in Egypt, no Exodus, and no Conquest. Isreal came into being under Omri and about a century later Judah formed. probably as a client state of Omride Israel.
