Awareness Sleep Paralysis

I have been plagued with this for more years than I can count....I researched it...Kept a log of the times/dates etc,. to see if it had any connection..Also been involved in a sleep clinic...Still don't have the answers.

I read all the medical Literature. Discussed this with my colleages..I know how it all works...When the body is preparing for sleep or waking from sleep..."Meaning the point where we usually dream"...The brain sends signals to our body to shut down all muscle feeling and relfexes...excluding our eyes, brain and diaphram....which enables us to breath deeply during sleep..

For Awareness Sleep Paralysis sufferers...For some reason we are aware of this signal and stay aware during the process which gives us what some call "The Old Hag"...the heaviness or the feeling of being pushed down or held down and unable to move is caused by the diaphram contracting to make us breath deeper and give our heart muslce a rest...

Now with all that being said...a person who has an "ASP" is aware of it happening and unable to move....and for some reason a terrible fear, a whooshing or white noise sound in the ears and some even say they hear people talking in languages they can't understand..Some hear a pinging noise that is deafening to the person...Some say that they are aware of their surroundings "as in if the tv is on...they can tell you exactly what show is on etc,.

Some people believe that this phenomena is paranormal or alien abduction related...For those who suffer from ASP....you not alone...Over the years I have come to somewhat control my episodes...I'm able to move my eyes back and forth...move my fingers and toes and this morning during an episode I was able to move my body just slightly...so that my husband could see me doing it and pull me out of it...

What I found very strange was.....at approximately 4 a.m...my husband "who by the way was doubtful of my situation...over the years"...Was sympathetic but didn't know what to think...Had his first 2 ASP episodes...He has never experienced this before and was pretty shaken...He described it to me after my ASP occured....He said...."did you have one of those episodes, I said yes, he said...I think I know what your talking about now...he started to describe what had happen to him...

He said that he became aware that he was awake but was unable to open his eyes..it hurt to try to breath because his chest felt compressed...or he felt like he was being held down...while all this was occuring he could hear a whooshing really loud white noise sound in his ears..and he said that even though he was unable to see it was like bombs were going off above him very loud he said, like fireworks or firecracker noises...a feeling of complete helplessness...then he asked me how long those things last...I said usually a couple seconds but sometimes people can experience them for longer....

All in all it was a wierd waking day.....My question is...Is there anyone else on this forum that experiences ASP? Any information you have about it would be appreciated. I belong to a yahoo group that is called ASP-L...where we discuss this topic at length...Just wondering if anyone has any other information....El Bandito
