AD/HD & ADD
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is a condition affecting children and adults that is characterized by problems with attention, impulsivity, and overactivity. It affects between 3-7 percent of schoolage children, and between 2-4 percent of adults.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is the current diagnostic label for a condition that has been recognized and studied for over a century. Over the years, it has been known by several other names inlcuding "brain damaged syndrome," "minimal brain dysfunction (MBD)," "hyperkinetic impulsive disorder," and "attention deficit disorder (ADD)."
The body of scientific literature documenting the reality of this condition is immense.
AD/HD or ADD?
"AD/HD" (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is the term now used for a condition which has had several names over the past hundred years. Science recognizes three subtypes of AD/HD (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined). A diagnosis of one type or another depends on the specific symptoms (i.e. the "diagnostic criteria") that person has.
While some individuals, including many professionals, still refer to the condition as "ADD" (attention deficit disorder), this term is no longer in widespread use. For those who may have been diagnosed with ADD, the corresponding diagnostic category, using current terminology, would mostly likely be "AD/HD, Predominantly Inattentive Type."

I won't be offended if you state your opinion Geri, in fact I'd prefer if everyone gave theirs as the only way to get a truly objective view of illness is by the personal experiences of others.
Edit: I've split this into a new thread so we can discuss this in more detail _________________

I am kind of interested in hearing you opinion also Geri. I have been around several children and help raise a niece (severe case) that has ADHD. _________________ NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM |

What gets me with ADHD is how quick doctors are to diagnose you with ADHD... Even when you don't have it... I remember there was a boy in my class a few years ago who was, as the teacher called it "retarded". The docs diagnosed him with ADHD, even when he didn't have it and prescribed him with Ritalin. Also, this kid got out of doing his homework... So some other kids tried it, and guess what? The doctor diagnosed THEM with Ritalin... jeez _________________

My nice was/is ADHD. We had to fight to get her a properly diagnosed. The Doctors did not want to go that route but when they finally did after 3 years Lisa was finally able to live a reasonably normal life. _________________ NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM |

I don't know what your opinion was Geri ...but this is mine....I have seen numerous children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD...some cases were authentic..and some NO!!! It really made me mad to see these doctors diagnosing over active kids with something that made them walk around like droids...
My nephews "both of them" were diagnosed with ADHD...they were very young and as a result became bed wetters etc,...you couldn't have a conversation with them ...they were withdrawn...My brother finally had them weened off of the Ritalin..."At my request" I told him...we have to deal with the problem not put a band-aid on it...They went from being failure students...repeating 2 grades to straight A students and also very out going young men...They did have to attend ..."Anger management" classes...it wasn't ADHD. it was the stress of their mom and dads relationship that had them haywire...so in the long run...they were miss diagnosed...it's a shame...and teachers at the schools are sometimes totally wrong...They told me my daughter had a form of ADHD..and also dislexia....ok so she was writing her "P's and d's wrong"...that was 2nd grade...She is now starting her second year of college as a "Journalist/Mass communications major, with a minor in English"...hmmm a girl who had an active imagination and still does...becomes a writer...and by the way she isn't dislexic nor does she have ADHD...difference was...I wouldn't put her on any medication..told them they were wrong...and yep they were...Everyone be very careful...some teachers just don't want to teach an active kid....Just my opinion....El Bandito
